Over the weekend, postal workers and communities across the country banded together helped those struggling to put food on the table.

The “Stamp Out Hunger” effort commenced on Saturday and is the largest one day food drive in the nation. About 10,000 postal workers throughout the United States participated in this drive to help local communities.

El Ralston has worked as a letter carrier for nearly 25 years and he says he looks forward to this event each year.

“It’s not really a big burden.  Some people say its a big burden to us but I think for one day the impact that it makes it worth it.”

Every second Saturday in May, he goes around to the houses on his route and collects bags filled with non-perishable items that will be donated to the local food bank.

“It’s a big impact because during the summer the kids don’t have the food that they have lunch during school, so this helps provide the food for that gap,” noted Ralston.

Last year, the “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive collected 125,000 pounds of food.

“Every year it seems like people give a little more,” says Ralston. “I think as they learn about the program and what it’s about and how big of an impact it takes on the local community. We’re the eyes and ears of the community as letter carriers. We see it all, we do it all and we actually see the people it impacts.”

“When the community is able to support what we do through these type of food drives were able to help people who are in need or food insecure and that means they do not know where their next meal is coming from and we know that often that is not easy to notice. Hunger is all around us,” said Malik Perkins with the Ohio Food Bank.
